Batik and Paper Techniques - Workshops by Tunde Toth

Batik Techniques
28 - 29 January (Saturday, Sunday) 10am - 5pm
for beginners and participants with some previous experience
in Batik and fabric dyeing processes
Tutor:
Tunde Toth, Artist

This is a weekend programme designed to give you the option to choose a
one day introductory level course (on Saturday only) or a two-day course (full weekend).
Saturday's workshop introduces basic and contemporary processes of BATIK - an ancient fabric dyeing and decorating technique where hot wax is used as a resist on cloth. Participants will work on approximately 2 - 3 images/designs, using pure beeswax, paraffin wax and fibre reactive dyes on cotton cloth and will complete works with 2 - 3 layers of wax drawing and topical dyeing (up to 3 colours)

Sunday's workshop takes these processes further, allowing for more colours as well as covering various combinations of wax, introducing scratched and crackled textures, copper stamps and alternative tools. This programme also introduces batik on handmade papers.
Fees:
€ 75 - for Saturday including all materials used during the day
€ 135 - for the full weekend including all materials needed
3-4th March (Saturday - Sunday) 10am - 5pm daily
Papermaking Weekend
You can take part in both day's workshops or choose between Hand Papermaking (from plant fibres and recycled materials) or Silk Fibre Papermaking

Saturday: Hand Papermaking TechniquesUsing natural plant fibres (cotton, bamboo, abaca, esparto grass etc) and a combination of recycled materials
this workshop introduces traditional and contemporary papermaking processes

Sunday: Silk Fibre Papermaking
This is an experimental workshop, introducing two techniques used in Silk Fibre Papermaking.
Using a variety of natural materials – raw silk fibres, cocoon strippings, hand dyed silk tops, throwsters fibres, silk threads...etc – participants will create plain or colourful, textured, decorative, ``fabric – like`` papers.
These unique pieces are suitable for writing, painting, textile art- and collage works, stitching, embroidery and are ideal for 3 dimensional, sculptural projects.
Fee: € 75 per day or € 135 for the two days - including all materials

Both papermaking workshops are suitable for beginners as well as participants with some previous experience in hand papermaking. This course follows an experimental approach and covers a number of contemporary techniques. This weekend programme also includes a short slide show and talk on the 20th IAPMA Congress in Tasmania in 2009 and an overview of contemporary paper art practices.
Workshop Venue: The Studio, Bennettsbridge, Co. Kilkenny
Bookings for both courses are confirmed after € 30 booking deposit is paid in advance. Balance payments are due at the start of the course. Places are limited to 10 participants per workshop.
